Wellington: A Study Destination
Wellington is New Zealand’s capital and second largest city, with a population of 400,000 people.
Situated between the picturesque Wellington Harbour and rolling hills, the Wellington region offers something for everyone; a seasonal temperate climate, many different recreational opportunities, a culturally rich environment, and most importantly, a safe and secure city which opens its arms
to students from all over the world.
More than 20% of the population of Wellington was born outside New Zealand, with the people of many diverse races and cultures living together in harmony.
Wellington is also where the foreign embassies are found. This rich cultural diversity, combined with the fact that a high proportion of the population of Wellington is in study or further education, means that students from many countries immediately feel at home.
Wellington is widely regarded as being New Zealand’s most cosmopolitan city, being home to the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra, the New Zealand Ballet and outstanding live theatres.
Every second year Wellington hosts the New Zealand Festival of the Arts, offering a month long programme of exciting artistic and cultural events. It is also the location of the internationally highly-acclaimed National Museum
of Te Papa.
Wellington has gained international attention as the centre of New Zealand’s film industry. Several recent blockbuster movies such as Lord of the Rings, King Kong, and The Last Samurai are filmed in and around the Wellington region.
One of Wellington’s best features is its excellent public transport system and the ease with which you can get around. Central Wellington is only two kilometres in diameter – you can walk from one side to the other in under 30 minutes! You can wander from international hotels and meeting venues, to shops, cafés, bars, restaurants, art galleries and theatres.Wellington is well known for its many boutique cafes, night clubs, and fashionable bars, which rivals New York on a per capita basis.
Whatever your scene, Wellington is a fantastic city, and a great place to live, work, and study.
